Intercultural Cities Conference – Liverpool 08

Conference Track: Islam in Liverpool

As a port, Liverpool is the home of one of Britain’s oldest and most diverse Muslim communities.
The visit that I attended, considered the past and present of Islam in Liverpool. Beginning with a talk about the UK’s first mosque, founded by local convert Sheik Abdullah Quilliam in 1889 http://www.abdullahquilliamsociety.org.uk, and concluding with videos and a discussion with young Liverpudlian Muslims about their life in the city.
The talks, videos and discussion, took place at the Liverpool Supplementary School Youth Forum, in a deprived area of Liverpool called Toxteth: Click Here to View a Map of Toxteth, Liverpool

I also listened to the issues raised recently in their recent filmed study of attitudes to Muslim religion and culture in the city, asking questions such as “What conclusions have the young people drawn about the prospects for Liverpool as an intercultural city?”
