November 2008: Radio Salaam Shalom kicks off local Government Diversity Month

The Department of Communities and Local Government (DCLG) offices in Bristol house the national headquarters of the Planning Inspectorate for England. Radio Salaam Shalom was privileged to kick off the Inspectorate’s Diversity Month with a display in the main lobby of the administration building at Temple Quay in early November.

Volunteers from the station answered questions about the radio project and also gave practical demonstrations of what radio can do, recording interviews with staff for the Inspectorate’s audio archive.

Our team would like to thank the Planning Inspectorate’s Phil Bishop for the invitation to be part of Diversity Month.

Joining the party were RSS colleagues (from left) Dana, Naomi and Javed with Kalsoom and Kyle (third and second from left).

Radio Salaam Shalom presenter Naomi Levav Yoran was recently joined by friends and colleagues for a surprise ‘Bon Voyage’ party at the Bristol waterfront.

Her ‘Crossing Cultures Show’ co-host, Kalsoom Bashir, was there as was Saturday presenter Saleha. Other radio friends included ‘Abraham Nexus’ co-presenter Javed Latif, ‘Flying Carpet’ children’s show host Dana, Deputy Station Manager Farhan Cheema, ‘Pulse’ anchor Brendi Waks and Station Manager Kyle Hannan.

A tasty range of home-made treats was brought along by Naomi’s family’s wellwishers who packed out a small cafe on the Bristol canalside.

Station Manager Kyle Hannan said “The whole team’s had a great time working and socialising with Naomi over the last year and a half. We’ll all feel her absence as she returns to Israel with her family. It does make us feel quite proud that she’s going to be taking a little bit of what we’re doing here in Bristol and exporting it to the Middle East at this exciting time in Muslim and Jewish relations there.”

Reform Club, Pall Mall, London.

Radio Salaam Shalom presenters Naomi Levav (‘Crossing Cultures’) and Shagufta Iqbal (‘The Shabs and G Show’) joined Station Manager Kyle Hannan at the world-famous Reform Club in London for the launch of the UK Friends of the Abraham Fund Initiatives.

After an inspiring series of speeches from the guest speakers, it was time to network! Over canapes and conversation with intercultural musical collective Psychosemitic, as well as local representatives of the Neve Shalom/Wahaat As Salaam ‘Oasis of Peace’ village in Israel, the seeds of some exciting international cooperative projects were planted.

Intercultural Cities Conference – Liverpool 08

Day 2: Saturday 3rd May 2008

Conference Track: Islam in Liverpool
Hosted by Muslim Enterprise Development Service
http://www.muslimenterprise.co.uk

As a port, Liverpool is the home of one of Britain’s oldest and most diverse Muslim communities.

The visit that I attended, considered the past and present of Islam in Liverpool. Beginning with a talk about the UK’s first mosque, founded by local convert Sheik Abdullah Quilliam in 1889 http://www.abdullahquilliamsociety.org.uk, and concluding with videos and a discussion with young Liverpudlian Muslims about their life in the city.

The talks, videos and discussion, took place at the Liverpool Supplementary School Youth Forum, in a deprived area of Liverpool called Toxteth: Click Here to View a Map of Toxteth, Liverpool

For further information about the Liverpool Supplementary School Youth Forum, visit: http://www.livss.co.uk/AboutLss.swf

I also listened to the issues raised recently in their recent filmed study of attitudes to Muslim religion and culture in the city, asking questions such as “What conclusions have the young people drawn about the prospects for Liverpool as an intercultural city?”

Watch their video, online to find out more: http://www.mutualarising.com/youth/index.html

Audio interviews and recorded talks/sessions from this visit, will be broadcast in a ‘Intercultural Cities special show’, and will also be available soon as a Podcast, via the Media page of the Radio Salaam Shalom website at: www.salaamshalom.org.uk

This two day conference reconsiders learning, teaching and research in the field of intercultural dialogue from a variety of theoretical and practical perspectives. The first day will have a teacher/ practitioner focus, whilst the second day will be more focused on current research. The conference aims to enhance the exchange of ideas and there will be a lot of crossover between the two days.

This event is a partnership between the subject centre, The Centre for Intercultural Communication (CICC), University of the West of England and Bristol City Council.
